Reviving Human Touch in a Hybrid Workplace
In a recent workshop on new ways of working and hybrid working model, we were asked to reflect on what we appreciate the most about working from the office. The top answer was clear: the human element—social relationships, face-to-face interactions, and personal connections. These elements are not just perks of office life; they are essential to our sense of fulfillment and happiness.
Why is this human connection so important?
At the heart of happiness is a sense of belonging and purpose, which often comes from our interactions with others and the feeling that we are part of something larger than ourselves. Without these connections, we might feel a void that no amount of technology or digital interaction can replace.
The shift to remote and hybrid work models has its benefits—flexibility, no commute, and working from anywhere. But it also means we lose spontaneous interactions- chatting over lunch or coffee, exchanging casual brainstorms, and experiencing the everyday camaraderie that comes from being around each other.
As organizations adopt these new ways of working, they’ll have to think of ways to boost connections among employees. Technology lets us work from anywhere, but it can’t replace human interaction. How can we create meaningful connections when we’re not all in the same space? How can we keep that sense of community alive?
For many, thriving in the workplace requires more than just completing tasks; it also involves social interaction, and a reason get out of the bed every morning. If you are someone who relies on these human connections to function at your best, adapting to this new work model may involve a shift in how you engage with colleagues. Organizations can support this by having regular virtual coffee breaks, organizing virtual team-building activities, and arranging in-person meetups when possible. By finding creative ways to connect, we can preserve the vital relationships that make work fulfilling.
By focusing on the human elements that bring joy and purpose to our professional lives, we can build a work culture that balances flexibility with essential human connections. As we navigate this evolving landscape, let’s appreciate the valuable lessons we are learning and strive to create a work environment that enhances our overall sense of fulfillment and happiness.
